Showered with Compassion
‘Showered with Compassion’ is an acrylic painting encouraging us all to be softer with ourselves. It is inspired by reoccurring vivid dreams of being in a shower. I would start out in a scene that reminded me of past experiences in which I carried a lot of shame and heaviness around. As the dreams progressed, I was taken into a room with massive showers that felt so serene, as though I could wash off or let go of these past experiences. Through dreamwork, I identified the symbolism of a shower as a place of cleansing, healing, and letting go of old perspectives and mindsets that no longer serve the person I am becoming to welcome in new ideas and ways of being. Past versions of myself often resorted to harsh critical inner dialogue and perfectionism to maintain a false sense of control, where rest meant that I was lazy, and taking time to slow down meant I was not doing enough. In waking life, the shower is where I allow all of my thoughts, ideas, and feelings to flow without judgment. These series of dreams were reminders that I deserve to give myself the same grace and compassion I so willingly give to others.
The large shower area and the illusion of the room being in the sky represent the spacious and expansive feelings we get when we allow our hearts to lead. Green, the color associated with the heart chakra, is intended to encourage us to go into our heart space. The planet in the background symbolizes access to more possibilities when we choose from a place of compassion. The clouds come inside, offering their softness. The woman in the shower openly allows herself to feel without attachment or judgment about what those feelings mean while the water carries it away. She can feel a soft breeze from the large open window in front of her, just enough to remind her that to feel means to be alive.
Notice when the voice inside you is being judgemental and harsh, and remember that you have access to this place of compassion anytime. It resides within you, waiting for you to step into whenever you need it.
The original painting is 16x20 with a glossy varnish finish and comes with hanging hardware. Prints are also available here.
